Logan Waterman reviewed on on June 12, Elrod writes smart books. And she writes fun books. At the same time. It crosses many lines and genres, from vampire and urban fantasy, to pulp and noir.

Jack Fleming is charismatic, likable and above all a character we can identify with. He is smart enough to be engaging, and witty enough to be fun. Yet he has no problem with a little two-fisted action, when the situation calls for it.
Elrod obviously loves the period in which her books are set, and has researched it well. The stories are immersive and realistic in the settings and language, but can still be easily followed by someone who has not spent far too much time watching Bogart and Hepburn. All her characters are fully formed three-dimensional people with distinct voices and personalities.
There are gunfights, gangsters, vamps of both varieties , mysteries, intrigue, and sex, and a friendly ghost. And anyone who likes a damn fine, old fashioned film-noir type pulpy story, with a bit of that old black magic thrown in for spice. You will not be disappointed. Michael Bernardi reviewed on on May 27, I'm a big fan of Pat Elrod, so when I found out about this collection, I bought my copy at once, and was not disappointed.

While I had read some of the stories before, there were more than enough that I hadn't that I felt the small outlay well spent. Also it's very nice to have all these stories collected in one place, instead of scattered around various anthologies. I enjoyed all of these, even the re-reads, except for the Hamlet one I'm not a big Shakespere fan.
But in a collection only finding one dud just not my genre is pretty good going. TexasRed reviewed on on May 24, This collection of short stories is great for reading one at a time, when you just have a few minutes. The characters are real, the plots are marvelous, with just the right amount of twists to keep you coming back for more.

Some fantasy, some straight mysteries. Still a really good read of the author's previously published works.
Saw this on BN. I really enjoy her "Vampire Files" series and the collection has 15 short stories from multiple series and stand-alone ones so it seemed like a good value. I enjoyed the stories in this book. You get a lot of them too so it feels more substantial than many short story collections. They made up the bulk of the collection and I've always enjoyed the Saw this on BN. They made up the bulk of the collection and I've always enjoyed the series so it was fun to have more.
The other stories in the collection were a weird assortment, though Elrod took time to explain where each story originated from and that helped the understand the theme. One of them was a weird sci-fi story and it seemed so out of place from what I've read of her previously, which made it my least favorite. I hope she continues to release stories directly like this as it can be years between formally published novels otherwise.
Jan 14, Sandy rated it liked it Shelves: short-stories , vampire. The majority of these stories were vampire stories which is what I was expecting. Jul 02, Jae rated it liked it. Good variety of short stories, ranging from stories involving characters from P. Elrod's own Vampire Files, characters from classic literature, modern day mysteries and futuristic science fiction based on other worlds.
Each story built a richly atmospheric setting for the story and although the Vampire Files short stories were plentiful, some only involved the series' secondary characters and they were well spaced throughout the book so it didn't feel like a collection of Jack Fleming stories. While some of the stories left me wanting more, a few only left me anticipating the next editing oversight.
